Christopher's Restaurant, London - American fare with finesse - a la carte dining

Christopher Gilmour, the well-respected owner of Strand Stalwart Christopher's, runs one of the most sophisticated American grills in London.

Slickly refurbished in 2002, the dining room has lovingly retained most of the listed building's original features. It has also acquired some stunning new style, with strong colours and striking accessories. The high-ceilinged dining room is resplendent in silk panels, and the first floor views show Waterloo Bridge in a gloriously grand fashion.

All this and you haven't even lifted a fork to mouth. But you won't be disappointed by the menu's modern take on traditional American steak and lobster fare. Tuck into tasty Maryland crab cakes for one - move onto a succulent steak with all the trimmings - and finish with a heavenly slab of rich cheesecake.

• Roast pumpkin mousse with roast red onion, shitake mushrooms, grilled peppers and pumpkin salsa
• Paillaird of Venison, sweet potato and dried plum potato terrine, black pepper and blueberry glaze
• Grilled zucchini wrapped swordfish steak, escabeche of cherry tomatoes
• Pan fried fillet of sea bass with fennel, roast red peppers, anchovy dressing
• Grilled 10 oz. fillet steak, béarnaise sauce or carpetbag style with fried oysters
• Grilled 14 oz. New York strip sirloin steak

Steaks are available with béarnaise sauce, peppercorn sauce, steak sauce and blue cheese sauce
