Porter's English Restaurant, London - splendid Covent Garden - a la carte dining

Prepare to return to the good old days...

Way back when the piazza was still a working fruit and vegetable market, the seventh Earl of Bradford had the good sense to establish this fine tribute to traditional English fare. Now surrounded by all things trendy and slick, Porters remains a bastion of our culinary heritage, along with Simpson's in the Strand and Rules on Maiden Lane.

But unlike its fellow true Brit restaurants, Porters is refreshingly relaxed and child-friendly. It also has a firm grip on pricing, so its menu shows surprising value for money - an unexpected treat for all Covent Garden locals and visitors.

As to the food itself, well every dish is probably someone's favourite. Try the marvellous pies and grills, or the great wild boar and sage sausage to see what we mean. But do leave space for the super comfort-food puddings, just like nanny made.

• Steak, Guinness and mushroom pie - steak in a sauce of mushrooms, tomatoes, Guinness and herbs, topped with puff pastry
• Fisherman's pie - cod, salmon and prawns, in a creamy dill and parsley sauce, with cheese and potato topping
• Porters Wellington burger - seasoned minced steak, topped with mushroom pâté; served in an onion bun
• Sticky toffee pudding - a classic rich and sticky date sponge pudding
• Apple, blackberry and hazelnut crumble - stewed apples and blackberries with an oaty hazelnut crumble topping
• Chocolate fudge cake - rich chocolate and fudge cake served with whipped cream
