Maxwell's Restaurant, Covent Garden - feel-good USA feasting, a la carte dining

Right on the Piazza and almost facing the tube, this feel-good slice of America is just the watering hole you need. So after you've hit the shops, laughed at the street theatre, and admired the Indigo Jones architecture, this is where you head.

We love this ultra-handy bar and restaurant. As do all the right sort of metro-wannabes and young luvvies. It's got a buzzy upbeat vibe to lift even the most jaded of moods. And they've very craftily managed to work a winning combination of good diner style food with a sensible bill.

We can vouch for the brilliant burgers and thirst-quenching cocktails. There are also plenty of old-time favourites such as quesadillas, buffalo chicken wings, barbequed ribs and Cajun chicken.

• Grilled portobello mushroom and goats cheese served on a crostini with rocket and pine nut pesto
• Nachos fondita melted cheese fondue with crisp tortilla chips served with sour cream, pico salsa and fresh guacamole two sharing
• Fillet steak from the long fillet, this is the most tender cut and is trimmed of all fat
• Parmesan ravioli - rocket, basil and pine nut pesto and mushroom ragout
• Apple pie with cream or cinnamon ice cream
• Banana split - chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream topped with hot chocolate sauce and roasted crushed peanut, whipped cream
